Poem: On Becoming Eighty

I wish I had been able to write a poem as lovely and honest, but it speaks for me so beautifully.

ON BECOMING EIGHTY

I shall no longer
Climb to the top of the mountain,
No longer
Dive in the deep ocean.

I shall no longer
Dance with my love till dawn,
No longer
Chase the wind on the shore.

I remember though
Worlds I have lived through.
Remember
Heights and depths.

I remember though
Joys and sorrows.
Remember
Days – and nights.

Now I can still
Feel the sun’s warmth,
Still
See the stars.

Now I can still
Hear the music,
Still
Smell the flowers.

Now I can still
Taste the sweetness,
Still
Love.
