My Favourite Gift

Whew, a breathing space! My memory returns to a full, family day on the 25th – driving up to London very early in the morning and back to Dorset that night on nearly empty roads, revelling in the peace, darkness and quiet. My favourite gift was a very large, beautifully presented book called, simply, WISDOM (publishers: Abrams Publishing).  Exquisitely and dramatically photographed by Andrew Zuckerman, we read the words of mostly famous people that we know, and some not so familiar; from actors to activists and politicians to peace-makers –  all masters of their trade and all over 65 years old.   You might like to start with the inimitable Billy Connolly - “Wisdom is the constant questioning of where you are. And when you stop wanting to know, you’re dead. You’re walking, but you’re dead.”

At the very least – do you agree or disagree?  Have a good, interesting and lively 2009!     Persephone

Yes, I agree with you about Wisdom!

I also love the book Wisdom. I was given it twice at Christmas by my sister and by my daughter. They both know me so well and that I would love it. Malcolm Fraser (Past Australian Prime Minister) taks about Nelson Mandela “….(he) realised you can’t come to a solution unless the point of view of the person to whom you’re sometimes very strongly opposed is also taken into account. The man’s charity, his humanity…he may be the living definition of wisdom.
