In my work- my need is to do just that....I believe we are challenged to utter those words when I/we have spent so little time in my life doing that. For me "being kind to myself" is only a half way house. In my own counselling work with clients, I would often ask people to be kind to themselves. I too believe that the term "love yourself" has become somewhat watered down and meaningless.
