I’m fed up with ‘loving myself’

The phrase  “Love yourself” is over used (especially in therapy) and has lost its meaning. I much prefer ‘be kind to yourself’  The word love has so many interpretations that it has become devalued even though we think we know what it means. The word Kindness is clear to all of us – whatever age we are, whatever our race, politics or financial situation. Kindness is much easier to understand, to teach, to talk about, to spread. We are told that we live in a disintegrating society. To legislate Kindness is not possible. However to behave kindly towards ourselves (it actually starts there) and others – is. Kindness is an integrating quality – it breeds care, companionship and friendship.  What do you think? Random Acts of Kindness?

I agree. In my own counselling work with clients, I would often ask people to be kind to themselves. I too believe that the term “love yourself” has become somewhat watered down and meaningless. I also believe that being kind to oneself is the start to many possibilites.

As an Elder from the Mankind Project and a relative newcomer to “work” I find the phrase “love yourself” very valued and nourishing.
In my work- my need is to do just that….I believe we are challenged to utter those words when I/we have spent so little time in my life doing that.
For me “being kind to myself” is only a half way house.
Thank you for the website Persephone…enjoying it muchly

Kindness is one of the ingredients of love, as is forgiveness, truth, hope etc. etc. So yes
    Be kind to yourself
    Forgive yourself
    Be truthful to yourself
    Give yourself hope
    etc.etc.
